Obama should take first step towards dark money disclosure

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. PIRG joins over 50 organizations to call on President Obama to issue an executive order requiring government contractors to disclose their political spending.

Emma Boorboor, Democracy Advocate with U.S. PIRG says, “In this year’s State of the Union President Obama called for ‘a better politics’ without dark money. U.S. PIRG is now calling on him to take the lead and shine a light by requiring that all government contractors disclose their political spending. Following a series of wrongheaded Supreme Court decisions that opened the floodgates to unlimited dark money in our elections, we are going to need a whole range of solutions. This executive order for government contractors is an important first step that the President can and should take right now.

“The Supreme Court was wrong to allow unlimited corporate money into politics, but while that is allowed, companies – especially those that get taxpayer dollars – should be transparent with their political spending.”
