Copy of U.S. PIRG's Complaint, Lawsuit over FTC Action on Unsafe Cars

You’d think that a car dealer couldn’t say that a used car is “safe” if that car is subject to a safety recall (like the Takata airbag recall or the GM ignition switch recall). But, because of a recent action taken by the Federal Trade Commission, used car dealers can do just that. In response, U.S. PIRG and other leading car safety advocacy groups—Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety (CARS) and the Center for Auto Safety—have sued the FTC and are asking the court to invalidate the FTC’s action. The complaint is available below.

17-Group Letter Opposing Rollback of State Privacy Laws

On Tuesday, 8 December 2015, the U.S. House Financial Services Committee is expected to vote in favor of a data breach notice bill opposed by consumer and privacy groups and many state attorneys general because its breach provisions are not only weaker than those of most states, but the bill includes a Trojan Horse provision to broadly preempt strong state privacy laws. Here is our letter, co-signed by 16 other groups, explaining why the bill is a bad idea.
