Jubilee USA Letter on Student Loan Rates

Jubilee for Students

Today, Jubilee USA Network, an alliance of faith based groups organized around responsible lending and borrowing practices sent a letter to Senate and House members urging them to protect “low interest student loans.”

Without congressional action, on July 1 over 7 million students will see the interest rate on their student loan double from 3.4 to 6.8 percent.

The letter noted that young adults should be allowed to develop into their “full productive potential,” rather than “being stuck in cycles of debt.”

“Increasingly we hear from our regional chapters, faith communities and congregations that we must address issues around student loans.”

A New Direction In Driving Trends

After a 60 year boom, driving is on the decline in the U.S. and no likely scenario shows it returning to previous levels of growth.

TOY SAFETY

Thousands of toys are on the market, each promising to educate or entertain our children. Unfortunately, not every toy is safe. Toy buyers can help protect children from injury by being careful, vigilant shoppers.

Beat High Bank Fees

Banks rely on consumer indifference when they raise fees. They count on consumers not shopping around. PIRG’s Big Banks, Bigger Fees reports routinely find that small banks and credit unions are not following the big banks’ lead; they still offer many free or low cost accounts.

You Can Help

We have a chance to cut billions in junk food subsidies this year. Your support will help us do the research, advocacy and grassroots organizing to convince our elected officials to act.

PRIORITY ACTION

Each year, our tax dollars pay for enough junk food additives to buy 8.5 two-liter bottles of soda for each person under 18. Help stop the subsidies for junk food.
