U.S. PIRG Staff
Shelby Luce is an Antibiotics Fellow for U.S. PIRG and works on its campaign to reduce antibiotic use in industrial farming.
As the Antibiotics Fellow based in Boston, Mass., Shelby’s main focus is working to convince corporations to stop serving meat raise with the routine use of antibiotics. She works to build relationships with champions in the food industry, health professionals, influential members of the government, passionate students and activists, and forward-thinking farmers.
Shelby will work on the continued efforts of PIRG to convince some of the largest restaurant chains in the U.S. to commit to phasing antibiotic use out of their meat supply chains by running more consumer campaigns.
Shelby works closely with health professionals across the country, and as a result, has helped launch PIRG’s new project—the Health Professional Action Network (HPAN). HPAN's 40,000 members will weigh in on efforts to protect public health, serve as a credible voice for science based policy solutions, and help to engage the medical and health communities at large in effective advocacy.
Before working at PIRG, Shelby studied Community Health and Environmental Science at Tufts University where she graduated Cum Laude. She received the Seymour S. Bellin Research Award and highest thesis honors for her senior honors thesis on the role of corner stores in the lives of youth in Boston suburbs. She started the university’s Food Rescue Collaborative, which donates all excess food from the dining facilities to homeless families in Boston. She also served as Head of Fundraising for one of major public health student groups on campus.
