What’s New
Four members of the House of Representatives introduced the Kids Safe Chemicals Act in November, 2005. This bill would require manufacturers to prove chemicals are safe before they’re put on the market.

How You Can Help
Take a minute to tell your senators and representative to protect kids from toxic chemicals and cosponsor the Kids Safe Chemicals Act.

Overview
Even though we lack basic health information for the vast majority of chemicals, there are chemicals currently on the market we know are potentially hazardous to our health.

In order to adequately protect human health and the environment, the PIRGs support phasing out the most hazardous chemicals on the market, and replacing them with safer alternatives. Some of these chemicals have certain physical properties, known as hazardous properties that are a cause for concern. Some chemicals we know cause cancer. Others we know interfere with learning and development.

To make things worse, many of these chemicals are showing up in our homes. They're found in common household products, such as carpet, furniture, and computers. Even worse, some of these chemicals have been found in our blood, and in our breast milk. U.S. PIRG wrote a report that found toxic chemicals in baby products. Read our report, "The Right Start."

To protect people from chemicals that may cause health problems, the PIRGs have been working to build support for a bill in U.S. Congress that would require manufacturers to prove chemicals are safe before they’re put on the market. The Kids Safe Chemicals Act of 2006 has been introduced in the Senate (S. 1391) and the House (H.R. 4308).
