The NJ State Senate passed a bill yesterday that provides $45 million for electric school buses over the next three years. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) will use this funding to determine the operational reliability and cost-effectiveness of replacing diesel-powered school buses and distributing grants to schools.
We applaud the New Jersey advocates and lawmakers who made this funding possible and urge Governor Murphy to sign it into law soon.
“This generation of kids should be the last generation that gets a toxic daily dose of diesel fumes on the way to school every morning. More than 15 years ago, New Jersey voters overwhelmingly supported a ballot question to clean up dirty diesel school buses. Back then, we didn’t have any other option. Today, states around the country are leading the way in making the transition to electric school buses. Diesel emissions seep into the cabin of existing school buses and our children’s lungs. It’s time to protect our kids’ health and air quality by taking the first step to electrification. We thank Sen Diegnan’s leadership on this legislation,” said Doug O’Malley, Director of Environment New Jersey.
State government fleets operate thousands of vehicles, and agencies can use their purchasing power to invest in more electric vehicles. Ask your Governor to lead by example by directing state agencies to purchase electric vehicles.
