Days before the nation reached the grim milestone of 400,000 COVID-19 deaths, U.S. PIRG called on Congress to approve sorely needed funding for efforts to regain control of the virus.

U.S. PIRG called for Congress to swiftly approve requests for COVID-19 response funding outlined by President Joe Biden on Jan. 14, days before his inauguration. The requests were expected to include $20 billion for the nation’s vaccine program, $30 billion to increase supplies of PPE and $50 billion to ramp up testing infrastructure.

“Our nation’s Achilles’ heel when it comes to our COVID-19 response has always been a severe lack of federal funding and coordination,” said Matt Wellington, director of U.S. PIRG’s public health campaigns. “President Biden’s funding requests are the public health investments we need to tackle this virus.”

Since the outset of the COVID-19 crisis, U.S. PIRG has called for a stronger federal response to the pandemic.
