Climate Solutions End Fossil Fuel Subsidies Electric Buses for America By implementing common sense climate solutions today, we can preserve a livable planet, clean air and clean water for generations to come. Ending our reliance on fossil fuels It’s time to retire coal-fired power plants and oil-based transportation systems, and stop investing in fossil fuel infrastructure. We should make smarter choices, like investing in more solar panels and wind farms and electrical storage capacity. We need more electric vehicle charging stations and electric buses, and fewer diesel and gas-powered vehicles. Doing these things will not only preserve a livable climate, but will protect public health and make the U.S. energy production more sustainable. Over the course of its lifetime, current fossil fuel infrastructure will produce more than enough emissions to increase global temperatures by 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius by the end of the century — which the science is clear that we need to prevent. It will also result in people across America regularly breathing polluted air that will increase their risk of premature death, trigger asthma attacks and lead to other adverse health impacts. In fact, in 2018, 108 million Americans lived in areas that experienced more than 100 days of degraded air quality. And as the planet becomes warmer, air pollution will only get worse. All told, accounting for subsidies, incentives, environmental and public health costs, and other damages, the fossil fuel industry costs the U.S. a staggering $649 billion every year. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We have the technology and know-how to secure a safer and healthier future. But we need policy changes at every level of government to ensure a smooth and swift transition away from fossil fuels. Ending our reliance on fossil fuels will also help save Americans money. Transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy could save consumers as much as $321 billion in collective energy costs. Owning a plug-in electric vehicle today could save consumers thousands of dollars compared to owning a gas-powered vehicle. The more electric vehicles that are plugged into the grid, the more we could all save because it will drive down rates for all consumers. Our Climate Solutions plan Our Climate Solutions plan calls for federal, state and local governments to end subsidies and other incentives for fossil fuel infrastructure that gives it an unwarranted market advantage over renewables; to put a price on carbon that fully accounts for the harms fossil fuels impose on society; and to incentivize renewable energy infrastructure, energy efficiency and zero-emissions transportation technology. We should be doing everything we can to accelerate the transition to renewable energy to clean up the largest sources of carbon pollution. We need more wind turbines, solar panels and electric vehicles—not more fossil fuel infrastructure. By ending subsidies that give fossil fuels an unwarranted advantage and properly pricing carbon pollution, we’ll free up more money to invest in renewable energy technology, and the market will more quickly move toward renewable energy, which is already cost-competitive in many places. These are climate solutions that Americans of all stripes can get behind. That’s because a livable climate, clean air and water, and healthy communities aren’t partisan values; they are American values. We’re committed to working with people from all across the political spectrum around common-sense solutions to the climate problem, whether it’s drivers who want to go electric or small business owners who can benefit from smart climate action programs. Our advocates in Washington, D.C. lobby members of Congress from both parties. Our advocates in the states build coalitions that include doctors and nurses, religious leaders and educators, and people from all walks of life. Our organizers and canvassers engage hundreds of thousands of people. Our members and activists live in all 50 states. We have the ability to mobilize grassroots support and organize the in-district activity that’s necessary to get Congress to act. A healthier, safer future is possible, but only if we move fast. PRIORITY ACTION Call on Congress to End Fossil Fuel Subsidies Our tax dollars shouldn't be propping up an industry that's contributing the climate crisis. We're calling on Congress to end these subsidies — but we need your help. Tell your U.S. House representative: End fossil fuel subsidies. TAKE ACTION Climate Solutions campaigns End Fossil Fuel Subsidies Americans subsidize the fossil fuel industry to the tune of $20 billion every year. We shouldn’t waste tax dollars fueling the climate crisis. Electric Buses for America Electric buses don’t emit any tailpipe pollution, eliminating exhaust that is contributing to climate change and linked to asthma attacks, respiratory illness and cancer. Carbon pricing is a proven and effective way to help us meet that goal.
