Illinois State Route 53/120
Illinois State Route 53 travels north-to-south across Chicago’s western suburbs. Northwest of the city, an expressway portion of Route 53 ends at the border between Cook County (home to Chicago) and suburban Lake County. For decades, local, county and state officials have considered extending Route 53 northward along a new right-of-way, where it would branch east-to-west as a bypass of existing Route 120, paving over open space from Interstate 94 to rural lake communities.
Illliana Expressway, Illinois and Indiana
Illinois and Indiana are proposing to build a new highway across the far southern extent of the Chicago metropolitan area at a cost of more than $1 billion—and perhaps as much as $3 billion. Intended to divert truck traffic from Interstate 80, the tolls charged to finance the highway could instead discourage trucks from using the roadway.
In the path of Hurricane Laura? Here are tips to prepare
Millions of Americans are in the path of Hurricane Laura, which is projected to become a major hurricane and make landfall along the Texas and Louisiana coasts. As with most hurricanes, life and property are threatened not just by wind, but by storm surge as well.
Interstate 11 from Phoenix to Las Vegas, Arizona and Nevada
Arizona and Nevada have proposed a $2.5 billion project to expand U.S. 93 through the desert between Phoenix and Las Vegas—a change that would mean the road could be added to the federal Interstate highway system and renamed I-11—despite planners’ acknowledgments that barely any of the existing 200-mile road has any congestion at present, and that even under conditions of rapid traffic growth, that will not change substantially.
Interstate 30, Arkansas
Interstate 30 runs north-south through the heart of Little Rock and North Little Rock, linking the communities by a bridge across the Arkansas River. The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) has proposed to replace the bridge, which was built in the 1950s, with a wider span connected to expanded highway links on both sides of the river, encompassing 6.7 miles of highway.
Interstate 35 Expansion, Austin, Texas
Interstate 35 on its route through the heart of Austin is notoriously congested, and its traffic is a constant topic of complaints and news coverage. Commuters are desperate for a fix. But a proposal to add miles of new lanes will likely only exacerbate the problems that led to congestion in the first place.
Interstate 4 “Beyond the Ultimate,” Florida
When Interstate 4 was built through Orlando in the 1960s, few could imagine the city’s future growth. The population of Orange County, where Orlando is located, has more than quadrupled since 1960, while the Orlando area has simultaneously experienced the growth of a tourism economy that draws more than 66 million visitors each year – more than any other U.S. city.
