Consumer Product Safety Commission needs stronger enforcement authority

WASHINGTON — The exercise machine maker Peloton finally recalled its Tread+ and Tread treadmills on Wednesday, three weeks after the Consumer Product Safety Commission warned consumers to stop using the treadmill after Peloton pushed back against the CPSC request for a recall.

The CPSC has linked these treadmill models to one child’s death and dozens of injuries. The recall covers about 125,000 machines.

In response, U.S. PIRG’s Consumer Watchdog Program Director Teresa Murray released the following statement:

“Peloton finally got the message that it should cooperate, but only because the CPSC was very loud with its public response to the company’s refusals to act. The Consumer Product Safety Act gives manufacturers too much control over recalls. It’s a problem Congress didn’t fix when it otherwise strengthened the agency after the 2007 ‘Year of the Recall.’ Congress should fix it now.”
