About U.S. PIRG
Our team of researchers uncovers the facts; our staff bring our findings to the public, through the media as well as one-on-one interactions; and our advocates bring the voice of the public to the halls of power on behalf of consumers.
An Independent Voice For Consumers
U.S. PIRG is an advocate for the public interest, working to win concrete results on real problems that affect millions of lives, and standing up for the public against powerful interests when they push the other way.
The problems we face don’t care if you’re a liberal or a conservative, or if you live in a red or blue state — they affect each and every one of us. That’s why, for decades, we’ve taken a non-partisan, fact-driven, results-oriented approach to our work. And with your help, we can take on the difficult challenges ahead.
Lots of progress, but still lots left to be done
U.S. PIRG is calling on municipal, state and federal policymakers to mandate face masks in all indoor public spaces, as well as in outdoor locations where it’s hard for people to socially distance six feet apart.
U.S. PIRG and its state affiliates are working to ensure that every eligible American voter has the ability to participate in democracy, even during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. We’re calling on states to start preparing now to ensure safe elections in November, including emergency expansion of vote by mail, sanitized and socially-distant polling places and other measures.
This weekly update highlights the work we’re doing on the COVID-19 voting front, and other important developments in the news.
U.S. PIRG Right to Repair Campaign Director repsonds to Apple's announcement that more than 140 companies are joining with 700 or so locations in its Independent Repair Provider (IRP) program. These shops, unlike most repair shops, will be permitted to purchase Apple parts and service tools, and the move is seen as a response to pressure from Right to Repair.
Over the last four months, while the COVID pandemic has occupied the forefront of the American public’s consciousness, the Trump administration has indefinitely suspended a series of EPA regulatory activities and undone a collection of crucial environmental protections.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, now more than ever, we need to work together to ensure that our government has a coordinated, strategic response to safeguard the public’s health, protect consumers from emerging dangers and ensure people can still participate fully in our democracy.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced that it is rolling back regulations of perchlorate, a harmful chemical found in rocket fuel. Perchlorate is linked to thyroid damage and can impact the health of newborns and children.
You shouldn't have to choose between casting your ballot and risking your health. U.S. PIRG is calling on states to start preparing for the November election now by expanding their vote-by-mail options, and by planning for sanitized and socially distant polling places.
Along with other groups in the Public Interest Network, we are making contributions to local community groups working to eradicate racism, reduce gun violence, heal communities, and/or achieve fair, effective public safety programs and criminal justice systems.
