Health groups call on U.S. Senate to protect emergency workers

 

A coalition of leading public health and medical groups in several states across the country are urging U.S. senators to push Senate leadership to establish central, transparent coordination of the medical supply chain in the next coronavirus relief package. The coalition is petitioning the Senators because health officials from coast to coast have expressed serious concern about continued shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE).

On December 22, 94 Members of Congress signed a letter to SEC Chairwoman Mary Jo White, urging the SEC to continue developing rules that strengthen corporate political spending disclosure.

U.S. PIRG Joins Legal Brief Defending CFPB Constitutionality

Attached is a brief, co-written by PIRG Litigation Director Mike Landis, filed today in the DC Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals, filed on behalf of U.S. PIRG Education Fund and other leading groups in support of the CFPB's constitutionality. The full circuit will hear the case en banc on May 24th, after it vacated its own 2-1 panel decision holding the CFPB's structure is unconstitutional. We filed an amicus also at the panel level. We, along with several other consumer and civil rights groups, several members of Congress and several state Attorneys General, had unsuccessfully requested party-intervenor status in the case at the panel and en banc levels.

El 20 de septiembre, el huracán María azotó a Puerto Rico con vientos sostenidos de 155 millas por hora, a solo 2 millas por hora de ser catalogado un ciclón categoría 5. La marejada ciclónica junto a precipitaciones que excedieron las 35 pulgadas en algunos sectores causaron inundaciones catastróficas en toda la isla. Según el gobernador de Puerto Rico, el costo estimado de los daños causados por el huracán María es de $95 mil millones, 1.5 veces el producto nacional bruto del territorio. Puerto Rico es hogar de 3.4 millones de ciudadanos estadounidenses que ahora enfrentan escasez de alimentos y agua, un esfuerzo masivo de limpieza y la necesidad de reconstruir su sistema eléctrico.
