CVS-Aetna merger will increase prescription drug costs for many

CVS-Aetna lawyers, consumer advocates and health care organizations gathered in Washington for oral arguments on whether the Department of Justice’s proposed final judgment in the CVS-Aetna matter is in the public interest. 

Last October, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and five state attorneys general sued to prevent CVS Health (the nation’s largest retail pharmacy and one of the two largest pharmacy benefit managers) from acquiring Aetna (the nation’s third largest insurer). Their complaint alleges that the merger violates federal antitrust law by reducing competition, raising healthcare prices, reducing quality and stifling innovation.

You're Not Alone: CFPB Complaints on the Rise

While the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s new director entertains removing its consumer complaint database from public view, that website feature is proving its worth. The CFPB published a record 257,000 consumer complaints in 2018, according to a new report by U.S. PIRG Education Fund. That brings the total to nearly 1.2 million since the CFPB began collecting complaints in December 2011.
