Rep. Quigley introduces legislation to ban single-use plastics from national parks

On Friday, Rep. Mike Quigley introduced a bill into the House of Representatives that aims to ban single-use plastic serviceware from national parks in the United States. The bill -- known as the Reducing Waste in National Parks Act --  specifically targets plastic bottles, utensils, straws and packaging.

Report examines America’s waste problem over past 3 years

Every year, the average American throws out nearly 1,800 pounds of trash. On Thursday, PIRG Education Fund, Environment America Research & Policy Center, Frontier Group and Community Action Works released a new report, Trash in America: Moving from destructive consumption towards a zero-waste system. The report examines America’s waste problem and recommends 10 steps the United States should take to build a “zero waste” economy.

U.S. PIRG joins organizations in letter supporting virgin plastic fee

U.S. PIRG co-authored a letter, signed by 20 coalition partners, sent to the House of Representatives on Tuesday supporting a bill that would place a per-pound fee on virgin plastic used for single-use products. The bill, REDUCE Act of 2021, was introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Tom Suozzi, following a companion bill introduced in the Senate by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse in August.
